Canon Digital Photo Professional - free download
One of the pieces of software that I enjoy using very much is the Canon Digital Photo Professional. I originally got it a loooong time ago, back when I was taking photography classes. It came with one of the Canon cameras that I've bought over the years. At the time I used it to browse and sort my pictures, sure - and only years later I realized just how valuable and useful this piece of software is. It took me some time to find it again - this software is free, not particularly advertised outside professional circles, and unless you have it on a CD with your Canon purchase I'm honestly not sure how you'd find out about it.
For myself and for anyone else - I've attached the installer below, feel free to download and install it on a mac!
What is this software for, what does it do?
It allows you to browse and sort your pictures in a very nice way. Sure you can sort of do the same with a file browser, but this thing is just so much better.
Also of note: I think this photo browser does allow you some editing, like levels and brightness adjustment - but I never used that, I mostly care about the time savings when selecting, say, 10 photos out of a thousand.
Usage steps
The way I do it is as follows. Basically what you do is you go through your photos and any photo that you think is better than the others, you mark it with one star. Don't spend too much time of it, if two (or ten) photos are similar, mark all of them and move on. Once you go through all the photos from a photoshoot, or from that one day or that one vacation, in the filters click to show only the photos marked as one star. Then, repeat the process and mark any photos that you think are better than others with two stars. Once that's done, hide the photos marked as one-star, and go over the two-star photos and mark the better ones are three-star. You get the idea. This way, you don't have to keep in memory which photos you think are good - they are all right in front of you. And you know how many are similar, so you can decide to select one of each similar set.
Speaking of similar sets - once you want to select one out of, say, 6 photos from a burst, display all 6 in a grid. Chose one and mark is as three-star, hide the others, move to the next set (burst).
In conclusion
Using the Canon Digital Photo Professional can save you a huge amount of time.
