In order to improve my writing skills, I should write on a regular basis. The amount of writing is measured in either the number of words written, or the hours spent writing. Of course, there is an inherent conflict of interest, an inherent corruption when measuring work in such a way. See The Inherent Corruption of the Employee.
How will I promote and market my material? And for what purpose? What am I selling? What is the path (karate-do) that I'm pursuing, what is in my DNA? These and other questions are answered succinctly in The Core.
The main avenues for advertising seem to be social networks. Of course, I can pay for marketing and promotion, and I will, but also social media is already there and very well-established (to the point of being predatory, and totalitaristic) so I may as well use it. It was a mistake, a weakness and a lapse of judgement to not use it previously. Or rather, the success - whatever that might have been - that I received, did not align with my long-term goals at that time. So I guess I did right in avoiding social media back then - but it is time to change that position, and start using social media now. Besides, for all my avoidance of it, I still very much got caught in its traps, so I can't even say that I successfully avoided it. Avoiding it, makes it even worse, maybe.
And besides, the distinction I'm currently drawing is not between using vs not using social networks. It is between consuming vs producing content. If all I do is consume social media content, it is worse than a waste of time. If however I produce social content, specifically for the purpose of promoting my business, then perhaps it is worth it. So it is not about avoiding social networks per se, but more about using them in a correct and very strictly controlled manner.
I still believe that social networks are evil and harmful - unavoidable, perhaps, but harmful nonetheless. There is no conflict of vision when I hold both views: social networks are undesirable, and at the same time, I have to use them for business marketing. The two attitudes do not contradict each other.
And so with that, let's embark on the journey of re-using social media, once again. Together.
